ANNOUNCING NEW ALBUM, THE GIRL YOU KNEW
RELEASE DATE - SPRING 2021
Kate Gratson is a NYC based singer, songwriter, producer and cellist with sensibilities ranging from R&B to folk with strong roots in jazz. She delivers her poetic lyrics with lush vocals accompanied by ethereal synths, and intertwined with subtle electronic rhythmic elements. Making her debut in 2013, Gratson received a GRAMMY in the Schools award for her song, “Coins”, followed by the release of an EP of the same name, peaking at #14 on the iTunes Jazz charts. She re-emerged in 2019, after completing her degree in music composition and vocal performance, with the release of her single, “On to You”, off her upcoming debut album, The Girl You Knew.
A classically trained cellist and vocalist, Gratson was on course to pursue a career in classical music when, in high school, she developed a new source of inspiration in jazz. This marked a pivotal moment in her artistic pursuits, broadening Gratson’s musical tastes, and expanding her technical pursuits. It was in her senior year that Gratson won a spot as the lead soprano in the GRAMMY Camp - Jazz Session 2013 choir, receiving a two-week professional training camp in California, culminating in a recording session at Capitol Records.
Since the release of her 1st EP, Gratson has completed a BM in music composition and vocal performance and returned to NYC to focus on creating a sound all her own. Steeping herself in writing and producing, she took inspiration from artists who blur the lines between genres, such as James Blake, and Charlotte Day Wilson.
2019 was a breakout year for Gratson, releasing “On to You” at the end of the year; the first of her singles off her upcoming album, The Girl You Knew. With venues closing early in 2020 and the music world on pause, Gratson decided to delay the release of her EP, The Girl You Knew. Instead of her original release date of Fall 2020, Gratson decided to release 4 singles during the pandemic, continued to write, and eventually turned the six track EP into an eight track album, expected out Spring 2021.
